Cox Demands Senate and Whitmer Act on Property Tax Reform Passed by House

“The Senate and Governor Whitmer should stop stalling and pass this reform now.”

Livonia, MI - Republican candidate for Governor Mike Cox today called on the Michigan State Senate and Governor Gretchen Whitmer to immediately pass legislation requiring all local millage elections to be held on the November General Election ballot, part of his proposed Homeowners Protection Act.

This week Speaker Matt Hall and State Representative Matt Maddock led the Michigan House in passing legislation to move millage elections to November, preventing local governments from sneaking property tax increases onto low-turnout election dates where many voters don’t even know tax hikes are on the ballot.

“Michiganders are demanding property tax relief now and I will deliver it,” said Cox. “Kudos to Speaker Matt Hall and Representative Matt Maddock for getting this reform through the House. Now the Senate and Governor Whitmer must act.”

Cox included the reform last fall as part of his Homeowners Protection Act, a plan to rein in out-of-control property taxes and protect homeowners, seniors, and farmers.

Speaking Wednesday, March 11 to the Michigan Municipal League in Lansing, Cox warned local leaders that rising property taxes are crushing Michigan families, “I told them the truth, local property taxes are killing folks.”

“The era of cities sneaking in property tax increases in off-year, low turnout elections is OVER when I’m Governor,” Cox said.

“No more tax increases snuck past voters who don’t know it’s happening. No more seniors being forced from their homes. No more state taxes for homeowners and farmers.”

“Michigan families are being crushed by rising property taxes, and they can’t wait until next election for us to give them relief. The House has acted. The Senate and Governor Whitmer should stop stalling and pass this reform now. If they don’t, we’ll get it done when I’m Governor.”

Cox pledged that as Governor he will work with what he expects will be a Republican House and Senate to pass and sign the full Homeowners Protection Act, including property tax relief for seniors on fixed incomes and eliminating state property tax mills on homeowners and small farmers.
