Mike Cox: John James Misleads Voters with False Trump Endorsement Claims

“John James abandoned the President when things got hard and misrepresents the President when it suits his selfish interests.”

LIVONIA, Mich. — Republican candidate for Governor Mike Cox today blasted John James for attempting to mislead Michigan voters with a deceptive ad that falsely suggests he has the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

“John James is counting on Michigan voters not remembering the truth,” said Cox. “But voters aren’t stupid, and they deserve better than a recycled, misleading ad built to create a false impression.”

The James team recently released an ad using years-old clips of President Trump in an effort to imply he has the President’s support in the gubernatorial race. However, President Trump has made no such endorsement.

After previously benefiting from President Trump’s support in his Senate and congressional campaigns, James turned his back on the President, publicly criticizing him and even questioning his fitness to run for office.

It’s not just dishonest. It’s pathetic.

“You know, he’s running for Governor. I’m not sure I’m happy about that, John.”

Cox also criticized James for leaving Congress and jeopardizing the Republican House majority at a critical moment.

“At a time when Republicans need every seat to advance President Trump’s agenda, John James chose to abandon his post for another political opportunity,” Cox said. “Now he’s trying to mislead voters about where he stands and who stands with him.”

“This is a pattern with John James: say whatever is politically convenient, do what benefits himself, and then try to cover it up when voters catch on,” Cox added.

“Michigan deserves a Governor who is honest, consistent, and willing to fight for them. President Trump deserves an ally who will fight with him, even when it’s tough, not a career politician who abandons him when things get hard and misrepresents the President to benefit himself.”
