Mike Cox Fought Whitmer’s Power Grab – And Won
When Gretchen Whitmer used emergency powers to lock down Michigan, more than 600,000 citizens signed the Unlock Michigan petition to stop her. When Whitmer’s allies tried to kill that petition in court, Mike Cox stepped in, fought back and won.
THE FIGHT
Whitmer’s front group, Keep Michigan Safe, tried to shut down the petition and silence citizens. Mike Cox took the lead, defending Unlock Michigan and exposing Governor Whitmer’s abuse of power.
THE WINS
Court of Appeals (Aug. 17, 2020): Cox beat back Whitmer’s lawyers, keeping the petition alive and the fight going.
Supreme Court (Sept. 25, 2020): The Court refused to hear Whitmer’s appeal — a major win for Cox and every Michigander who wanted their freedom back.
EPGA Overturned (Oct. 2, 2020): The Supreme Court agreed the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act (EPGA) was unconstitutional—confirming the heart of Mike Cox’s legal argument.
THE RESULT
Mike Cox didn’t just defend Unlock Michigan, he helped end Whitmer’s unconstitutional overreach and restore checks and balances to Lansing. As governor, Mike Cox will continue to fight for people and defend the constitution.
