Cox: Misleading New Ad Won't Erase John James' Record on President Trump
"John James attacked President Trump when it was politically convenient, ignored him when he was asked to stay in Congress, and now lies to voters that he is President Trump's choice for Governor."
LIVONIA, MI- Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox today blasted John James for his latest deceptive advertisement designed to leave Michigan voters with the false impression that President Donald Trump has endorsed his 2026 gubernatorial campaign.
"John James is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars misusing President Trump’s words hoping Michigan Republicans will forget his repeated pattern of abandoning President Trump for his selfish ambitions,” said Cox. “But voters remember what John James actually said and did."
James Trashed President Trump After He Announced his 2024 Campaign
After President Trump announced his 2024 campaign, James publicly declared that Trump was "not fit to lead." Now, as he seeks higher office, James is attempting to wrap himself in the President's popularity while ignoring his own record.
James Now Lies, Misquoting President Trump
Cox also criticized James for featuring an old clip of President Trump saying, "Put John James in charge," despite the fact that the comment is years old and has nothing to do with James’ campaign for Governor:
"John James is as dishonest as he is selfish. Lying to voters and misquoting President Trump is exactly what a dishonest, career politician does."
James is Defying President Trump, Abandoning the House Majority
The ad also comes as Republicans warn that James' decision to leave Congress could jeopardize the House majority needed to advance President Trump's agenda.
President Trump himself publicly questioned James' decision to run for Governor, saying, "I'm not sure I'm happy about that, John."
